“Planar suspended membranes on Micro Electrode Cavity Arrays: formation, automation, imaging, and applications” online lecture by Ionera on September 15th, 2026

In collaboration with Ionera, we are hosting a specialized workshop centered on the biophysical principles of lipid membranes and the cutting-edge technology used to study them.

The workshop will take place on September 15, from 16:00 – 18:00h CET, featuring insights from both academic research and industry innovation.

📚 Session Overview

  • Part 1: Foundational Principles of Membrane Electrophysiology Presented by our PI, Carlos Marques, this section covers the fundamental physics of membrane behavior. Topics include electrical conductivity in ionic solutions, the membrane as a condenser, the intrinsic permeability of bilayers, and the mechanisms of pore opening under electrical stress.
  • Part 2: Presented by Ekatarina Zaitseva (Ionera), the development of the MECA Chips (Ionera’s Micro Electrode Cavity Array (MECA)-Technology) will be presented as well as currently used methods for membrane formation and protein reconstitution. Special emphasis will be put on the recently developed MECA OPTO system allowing for simultaneous optical and electrical readout. Various application cases, including examples from the user-community, will be demonstrated in this section.
